This week’s goals were to test the servos with the wireless transmitter, attach the battery housing to the chassis, and to test the chassis motors with the battery and wireless transmitter.
Testing Servos:
Jacob and Neil first tested the Servo functionality controlled by the wireless transmitter and powered by a power supply. The servos were tested isolated from the robotic arm to examine if the GUI would be controlling them correctly before placing them in their permanent locations.
All servos functioned as intended and are now ready to be placed in the arm and to be tested with the full weight of a microphone.
Testing Battery Powered Chassis:
Jacob attached the battery housing on to the chassis and powered the chassis motors and Arduino using the battery. While Jacob was performing the test, Neil helped to iron out the code to work with all motors at once and with the Bluetooth transmission. The chassis movements were tested on low pile carpeting and hardwood flooring and was able to accomplish all movements except for a slight drift on the strafing movements. The chassis performed slightly better on hardwood, so this will be investigated further on how to correct the drift on carpeting. Here is a video of the testing.
Determining Bluetooth Range:
In our experiences, most common studios do not have extremely large rooms at their disposal to record in. In fact, the largest recording room is at Studio One, which is 93ft x 55ft which is much larger than most studios out there. Given that each recording studio is built very different, whether they are built inside of a home, office, or even constructed purely for recording they will all have a large range of dimensions. The most recommended dimensions for a recording space start at a minimum of 20ft x 17ft. This is chosen in order to reduce the number of reflections and standing waves. So, with this in mind we will estimate that the range of the RCMS should only need to be within about 50ft open-air and in the case that the bluetooth transmitter is placed in the control room we will estimate that it should transmit at least 30ft behind closed doors.
